Picken Oval launch a terriffic success!
The Picken Oval re-development was finally launched Friday by President Andrew Taylor in a successful and exciting day for the club. Bringing together 6 different funding bodies - AFLNSW/ACT, Canterbury Council, State Government ( Linda Burney MP), Department Of Sport & Recreation, Sydney Water and the WSAFC, the re-development incorporates a unique design and resurfacing technique with Water sustainability features involving rain water harvesting from the roof of our licensed club. The President pointed out the great pride which the club has in bringing together such a diverse group of funders and in delivering what will prove to be a fantastic design for future like minded projects. The President also thanked former Junior President and current Senior Vice President Nick Miller for his invaluable assistance in getting the project up and going.
The re-development will alleviate the problems the club faced last year with the transference of all but one home game due to inclement weather which cost the club signifiacnt revenue. The surface is slated to be ready for the start of the season (April 10) and will provide an all weather surface serving the community, local schools and sporting teams under the Western Suburbs Banner. Works have already begun with major earthworks to begin this thursday.
The various bodies were represented by Mr Simon Lawton Deputy GM AFLNSW/ACT, Canterbury Mayor Mr. Robert Furolo, Ms. Linda Burney MP for Canterbury, Ms Liz Daykin Dept. Sport & Rec, Ms Sara Raishbrook Sydney Water, Mr. Bill Picken STC/Patron WSAFC/ Picken Family, Mr. Geoff Hatton Sustainable Turf Renovations and members of the Western Suburbs Senior, Junior and Women's teams.
